Mate – U.S. Brig Niagara
Job Description:
The Brig Niagara is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mate for the 2023 summer sailing season.
Mates are watch officers that leads a watch of professional crew and trainees. Mates assist the Chief Mate and Captain in the management of the ship’s operations and crew. This position is an opportunity for professional mariners in traditional sail to develop in a leadership position in square rig.
We seek applicants who are passionate about traditional sail, the continuance of square rig seamanship and sail training.
Responsibilities:
Mates work with the Chief Mate and Captain to manage the safe operations of the vessel and programs. A Mate oversees a watch and assists in the operation of the ship and training of crew and volunteers.
The Second Mate has the auxiliary duty of navigation and communication officer. The Third Mate carries ancillary duties as safety officer.
Qualifications/Experience:
Applicants must have significant traditional sail experience in square rig, hold a 200-ton GL/NC Mate License, and be a U.S. citizen. Applicants must have experience as a deck watch officer, traditional rigging, and management of crew and vessel operations.
All crew will be required to follow Covid-19 health and safety guidelines as set by FNL, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, CDC and USCG. Vaccination for Covid-19 is required.
Compensation & Benefits:
Pay is $1050.00 bi-weekly, or higher, depending on position sought and experience. Berthing on the ship and meals are provided.
There are shore facilities for crew at the Erie Maritime Museum. Professional development and license assistance available to select candidates.
This position is seasonal.
